The City’s Leaving Care Service are inviting young adults who have left the City’s care to come together to celebrate Care Leavers Week. Care Leavers Week is a national awareness week that runs from Wednesday 25 October until Wednesday 2 November. The Service will be welcoming young adults to an event during the week to celebrate the week and acknowledge their achievements. Over a lunch young care leavers will be able to find out what opportunities and help they can get from some of the city’s local and national organisations.

Nottingham City Council’s role as ‘Corporate parents’ challenges us every day to think about “would this be good enough for my child?” In January 2023 Nottingham City Council voted to treat care experience as a Protected Characteristic, meaning that across the Council we have a responsibility to think about how our services and policies impact our young people.

The Council House will be lit up orange on 25th October to mark start of Care Leaver’s Week

Cllr Cheryl Barnard, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Education, said: “Care Leavers Week is an important reminder that care leavers are wanted and welcomed into our organisations in Nottingham. Our city is committed to standing with care leavers, amplifying their voices, and working collectively to address the challenges they may face. By lighting up our beautiful Council House, in the heart of Nottingham, in their honour, we symbolise our support for care leavers and our dedication to creating a more inclusive and caring community.”

The Leaving Care Service is a group of Personal Advisors, Housing, Wellbeing and Employability specialists, who work with young people and adults, usually aged 18 to 25 years, who have been in the care of the Local Authority. The Service advises and supports young people through their move into adulthood and help them to live settled, ambitious and happy lives. We feel privileged to work together with this inspiring and resilient group of young adults at such an important, and often challenging time.
