Littering

May 19, 2016

Your litter, your responsibility.

We all play our part in keeping Nottingham clean. People tend to litter where litter already exists, or because they believe someone else will clean it up.

But litter on our streets make Nottingham look dirty and uncared for, and costs you as the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds to clear up each year.

We fine those who drop litter, whether a crisp packet, chewing gum, cigarette butt or something else £75 on the spot.

With more than 2,500 litter bins across Nottingham, there’s NO excuse to litter!

Our street scene teams empty over 7 million bins and clear litter on 6000 miles of road in a year, but council budgets are more stretched than ever and we need to make it clear that littering is unacceptable.

Littering from a car

Throwing litter from vehicles onto land is also a littering offence under section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

We take down the details of the driver’s vehicle, including the vehicle registration number and the registered keepers name and address is obtained from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

We will interview the registered keeper by letter to find out the details of the person who threw the litter. We will issue a fixed penalty notice in the post where the offender can reasonably be identified.

Fill in our online form or call us on 0115 9152000 to report a littering hot spot area.
