Fly-tipping

May 21, 2016

Dumping rubbish on the street is illegal – whether it’s two bin bags, a sofa, or a skip’s worth of rubbish.

Your rubbish is YOUR responsibility. Many people believe that fly-tipping is something they can get away with and there isn’t a victim – this is not true. If you fly-tip on private land the owner gets the stress and cost of clearing it; if you fly-tip on public land the taxpayer gets the bill; and in both instances, as well as breaking the law, you are ruining our city for everyone.

Not only does fly-tipping create an eyesore for residents, it is also a serious public health risk, creating pollution and attracting rats and other vermin.

In 2016 Nottingham City Council cleared 5920 fly-tips, costing our taxpayers over £300,000. Offenders can be given a fine of £300 and end up with a criminal record. See who we have prosecuted in Nottingham.

We install CCTV at fly-tipping hotspots, and we regularly carry out covert operations to catch fly-tippers.

Paid a man in a van to take it away?

If you pay someone from Facebook, Gumtree, or elsewhere online to take your rubbish away and they fly-tip it, YOU can still end up with a big fine and a criminal record. Ignorance is no excuse – your rubbish is always your responsibility.

It is also your responsibility to make sure that the person you pay to take away your rubbish is a licensed waste carrier who is disposing of it correctly – you must check that they have a waste carrier license before they do the job.

Always be wary of businesses that only operate through social media and do not seem to have a landline phone number or business address.
