Nottingham voters mirrored the national results in the EU Referendum and voted to leave the European Union yesterday.

Results for Nottingham were: Leave – 61,343 (50.8%); Remain – 59,318 (49.1%). The national figures were 51.9% for Leave and 48.1% for Remain. Turnout in Nottingham was 61.82%.

Deputy Leader of Nottingham City Council, Councillor Graham Chapman, said:

“I expect this outcome will result in two to three years of turbulence and may lead to the break-up of the UK. In this climate it’s important that we try to create as much stability as possible to protect jobs and the economy in Nottingham.

“In the short-term the pound is likely to drop which could have an effect on inflation and hit people in their pockets. I think we will also see a slow down in investment. European funding won’t stop immediately, but will dry up two to three years down the line, which we will be fighting hard for the Government to compensate us for.

“Nevertheless it was a democratic vote which we must accept. It is important above all that any divisions which have arisen in the city as a result of the campaign are mended. The City Council’s main job now is to do what it can to ensure we move forward together as a city and that we make the most of the new challenges facing us. But the Government will have to change its policies and listen to the discontent shown by the result to enable that to happen.

“Having campaigned all day yesterday, one good thing was that there was less acrimony on the streets than in the TV studios and that is something to build on.”
