Crowds are expected to attend this year’s brand new Chinese New Year Celebration in the city.
To celebrate the beginning of the year of the Rooster, the new FREE event will showcase Chinese culture in Nottingham’s Old Market Square.
Taking place on Saturday 21 January, 11am to 4pm, there will 22 marquees offering plenty of activities for families to get involved with, including:
- Chinese food and drink vendors
- Stalls
- Arts and craft stalls
- Learn calligraphy
- Traditional Chinese brush painting
- Story telling
Plus there will be musical and dance performances from 4 Chinese culture performers all the way from Ningbo, Marvel at the famous Chinese Dragon Dance and see performances by the Nottingham Chinese School.
The event is free and open to all ages and will give the people of Nottingham the chance to experience and learn all about Chinese culture.
Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “We have such strong and historical Chinese links in this city. There is a large and vibrant Chinese community in Nottingham and this event is just one of the ways we can celebrate the culture.
“Nottingham is a China friendly city and events like this only strengthen those links. This event will be exciting, educational and fun for all the family.”
Earlier in 2016, Nottingham celebrated 10 years of being twinned with the Chinese city of Ningbo. There were big celebrations, including the unveiling of two stone Chinese lions at Highfields Park, a gift from our sister city.
Back in November 2016, Nottingham City Council was awarded the ‘sister city of year’ by the Chinese Government for the links the city has developed with Ningbo, China. The Nottingham-Ningbo relationship was chosen by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries as the ‘sister city relations of the year’ because of the years of collaboration the two cities have enjoyed.
