Work to maintain and enhance the look of Nottingham’s iconic Trent Bridge – one of the key gateways to the city – has been completed.
The essential maintenance project which began in March involved painting all steel and cast-iron parts of the bridge, replacing some damaged cast iron parapet components and some stonework repairs to the piers and abutments. Over 11,000m2 of steelwork has been painted and 120m2 of gold leafing applied to the bridge fascia.
The painting, as well as providing an improved appearance cosmetically, more importantly provides ongoing resistance to corrosion and degradation of the structure and secures the long-term load-carrying capacity of the bridge.
The works were carried out on behalf of the City and County councils by Cleveland Bridge UK, one of the world’s most experienced and best-known steel bridge building and rehabilitation specialists.
Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport, Cllr Adele Williams, said: “Trent Bridge looks magnificent now that this essential maintenance work has been completed. Together with the County Council we are committed to maintaining and keeping this iconic gateway looking its best, and most importantly this work will help to protect and preserve the bridge for many years to come.”
Councillor John Cottee, Chairman of Communities and Place Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This work is an important investment in the City and County’s infrastructure, as it will prolong the lifespan of the bridge – a vital corridor for people travelling in and out of the city. Its grand design is part of our county’s heritage, so it’s important to keep it in tip top condition.”
