On Saturday 20 May, Nottingham residents are invited to put their best foot forward and celebrate National Walking Month with ‘One Big Walk in the Park’ – a series of fun, free walking activities hosted by ParkLives and Nottingham City Council.

The event will take place from 2.30 – 4.30pm at Wollaton Country Park, and will see ParkLives teams joined by representatives from Age UK Nottingham and Midlands Nordic Walking, to host a 3.5mile walk from the Grade I listed Wollaton Hall to Martin’s Pond. Participants will also get the chance to try their hand at Nordic walking along the route.

Nottingham is one of 10 cities nationwide taking part in the ‘One Big Walk in the Park’ initiative, which will see a series of walks hosted in cities from Dundee to Southampton throughout the day.

Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said: “More than a fifth of our city is made up of open and green spaces but so many of us don’t take advantage of them. Through ParkLives’ ‘One Big Walk in the Park’ we’re hoping to inspire the people of Nottingham to explore their local park, and discover the fun you can have on a walk outdoors.”

Adds Stevie Lord, ParkLives session leader: “Walking is hugely beneficial to your overall wellbeing and something as simple as a walk in the park can help you think more clearly. It’s always great to see local residents come to together at my regular Nordic walking session at Wollaton Park and we hope lots of people will join us on our ‘One Big Walk in the Park’ at Wollaton Country Park this Saturday.”

Now in its third year in Nottingham, ParkLives runs in 10 cities nationwide and is part of a £20 million commitment by Coca-Cola Great Britain to invest in community-based programmes. Activities are delivered by teams from Nottingham City Council and are designed to help to bring communities together and improve wellbeing.

Liz Lowe, ParkLives lead at Coca-Cola Great Britain, said: “We offer so many activities through ParkLives, but you really can’t beat a good walk in the park! Whether you take a stroll to relax, bring the dog with you, or take on a challenge like Nordic walking, a walk in the park can be good for the mind, body and and soul. We hope that our ‘One Big Walk in the Park’ initiative helps more people in Nottingham – and people across the country – enjoy walking in their local parks more often.”
