The Leader of Nottingham City Council, Jon Collins, has welcomed the jury’s verdicts at the Hillsborough inquests which found that the 96 people who died at the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in April 1989 were unlawfully killed and that fans were not to blame.

Councillor Collins said: “I’m pleased to see justice for the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster and recognition that it was a tragedy that could have been prevented.  Many Forest fans who where there and who saw the terrible events unfold, as I did, will know these findings are consistent with their own experience of the day and that finally, after all these years, a true account of those events has been heard, accepted, and publicly recognised by a jury and the coroner.”

The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Jackie Morris, has written to the Lord Mayor of Liverpool to pay tribute to the tireless efforts of families and fans who have worked so hard to seek justice. She said: “On behalf of the City of Nottingham, I offer our continuing support at this time and into the future.”
