Callous thieves have targeted Nottingham’s Grade II Listed War Memorial Archway at Victoria Embankment.
The thieves stole lead protecting both wings of the memorial, causing damage to the stonework. They also stole bollards and broke windows on the undercroft.
The council has reported the crime to the police. It’s thought the thieves struck at some point during the week of 11 September 2017 and the theft has only recently come to light.
Cllr Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “It is disgraceful that metal thieves will stoop so low as to steal the lead from a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives courageously fighting in two world wars.
“We are working with the Police who are investigating the matter and we hope the perpetrators will be brought to justice.”
Nottingham City Council is now working to repair the memorial and secure the site further.
If anyone knows about the theft at Victoria Embankment should contact the police on the 101 number, quoting reference 128-28092017 or call Nottingham Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55 111.
