Improvements are being carried out on the city’s District Heating system on Canal Street at its junction with Trent Street.
To reduce the impact of the works, they are taking place through the night. A temporary road surface is in place during the day so the road can remain open…
However, the uneven temporary surface requires all traffic to slow down when crossing this point which can lead to some delays in the area. For low slung vehicles it is advisable to take an alternative route if possible.
The scheme is due to be complete by 27 July 2016. Working hours are Monday to Saturday between 7pm and 6am, with no works happening on Sunday nights. Lane closures and traffic restrictions are in place at night-time but the road is fully open between 6am and 7pm.
For two nights 12 and 13 July the road will be completely closed. Diversions will be signed but this is expected to have an impact on traffic and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. The works have been timed to coincide with the closure of Trent Street while the final phase of improvement works is carried out on Station Street. Nottingham’s District Heating scheme uses low carbon energy from waste to supply 5,000 homes with heating and hot water, the network also provides 100 businesses with heating, hot water and electricity. 170,000 tonnes of waste from Nottingham and the surrounding areas is taken to the Eastcroft Incinerator where it is turned into energy rather than going to landfill.
Councillor Alan Clark, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Energy and Sustainability, said: “Nottingham is the most energy self-sufficient city in the UK and the district heating network is an important part of this achievement. These works are part of our ongoing maintenance works for the District Heating Network to ensure that the system keeps operating efficiently. Works include upgrades to existing pipework and additional infrastructure to allow for further connections to the system in the future.
“We are scheduling the work to take place at night to reduce the impact on traffic as much as possible however we do appreciate that this will cause some daytime delays in the area. We would like to thank road users for their patience whilst these important works take place.”
