The Leader of Nottingham City Council has paid tribute to Pope Francis, who died today (Sunday 21) aged 88.

The news was confirmed by the Vatican earlier this morning and Councillor Neghat Khan has offered her sympathies to Christians across Nottingham.

She said: “Nottingham is a city rich in diversity, home to more than 112,000 Christians. On behalf of us all, I extend heartfelt condolences to those mourning the loss of His Holiness the Pope.

“In times like these, we are reminded of the values that unite us – faith, hope and love.”

His Eminence, Cardinal Farrell, had earlier announced the death of Pope Francis, saying: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

“At 7:35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
