Councillor David Mellen, Leader of Nottingham City Council and Portfolio Holder for Schools, said: “I’d like to congratulate all pupils in Nottingham who have received their GCSE results yesterday, and thank them, their teachers, parents and carers for all the hard work and commitment.

“The Covid lockdown, and subsequent shutdown of schools across the country in March, was unprecedented and we shouldn’t underestimate the impact this has had on the 2020 cohort. Their efforts are all the more impressive for that.

“I am pleased that the Government saw sense and abandoned its chaotic algorithm system which last week disadvantaged so many A-levels pupils from deprived backgrounds. Fortunately, this meant that GCSE students have not gone through that same sense of profound – and totally unnecessary – disappointment and confusion.

“The powerful voices of young people from Nottingham and across the country forced the Government into a U-turn and has ensured that they received accurate grades based on their teachers’ assessments.”
