Free membership to help older residents stay active and connected

Nottingham City Council is launching Active Older Lives, a new programme designed to help older residents across the city get active or return to activity, stay healthy and connected.

From 5 November 2026, Nottingham City Council will offer free membership to Nottingham City residents aged 67 and over through its Active Nottingham leisure service, with access to swimming, gyms, fitness classes and health suites. Proof of age and Nottingham City residency will be required.

The programme will run until 31 March 2028 across all six Active Nottingham leisure centres: Clifton, Djanogly, Harvey Hadden Sports Village, Ken Martin, Southglade and Victoria.

Whether someone is new to exercise, returning after a break or already active, they can choose from existing activities that suit their interests, confidence and ability. Swimming, fitness classes and health suites will be bookable, subject to availability and the facilities at each centre.

The programme aims to help older residents improve their health and wellbeing, build confidence and independence, and connect with others through their local leisure centre.

Eligible residents will be able to join at any time during the funded programme.

Alongside the free membership offer, there will be opportunities to help shape the future Active Older Lives programme, with further health, wellbeing and social opportunities introduced as the programme develops. Information about these opportunities will be shared through the Active Nottingham website as they become available.

Cllr David Mellen, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:

“We want older residents across Nottingham to have every opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being active. By funding free membership for people aged 67 and over through Active Nottingham, the Council will make it easier for eligible residents to use our leisure centres, try different activities and find something they enjoy.

“Whether it is swimming, using the gym, joining a class or trying something new, our friendly Active Nottingham teams will be there to help people get started and find an activity that feels right for them. We also want older residents and our partners to help shape the wider programme, so it reflects what local people want and need.”

Information about how to join and book activities will be available through the Active Nottingham website from 5 November 2026.
