On 21 January 2026, Nottingham City Council secured a conviction for causing a noise nuisance against the company that operated Binks Yard and Cleaver and Wake until autumn 2025.

Island Quarter Canal Turn Operating Company was fined £8,000, with a further £1,200 in costs, for offences relating to excessive noise on a number of dates in June and August last year.

The Council served a noise abatement notice in 2023 in relation to music from the venue’s outdoor stage. Despite this, residents continued to raise concerns each spring and summer. For over a year, Council officers worked with the company to help it comply with the notice. However, the Council eventually lost confidence that sufficient steps were being taken to prevent further nuisance and gathered evidence that led to this conviction.

While the company was operating the venue, the Council received complaints from 49 different households, ranging from properties as close as 120 metres to as far as one kilometre from the outdoor stage.

Councillor Corall Jenkins, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Waste and Equalities, said: “We work closely with businesses across Nottingham to help them operate successfully while complying with the law, and the majority engage positively with us when noise issues are identified. Our approach is always to support and advise in the first instance, but where problems persist and cooperation is not forthcoming, we will use our legal powers to protect residents’ peace and quiet in their homes.”

A new, unconnected operator is now running the venue and has confirmed to the Council that it has taken account of previous issues and will put appropriate measures in place to prevent noise disturbance in the future.
