Around 23,000 postal voters in Nottingham City will be contacted about the need to reapply for their postal votes before 31 January 2026.

Changes brought in by the Elections Act 2022 will affect your postal vote. Under new rules, postal vote arrangements cannot last longer than three years. If you applied for a postal vote on or before 30 January 2024, then your postal vote is due to expire on 31 January 2026.

For anyone who wishes to continue to vote by post after this date, they will need to reapply, otherwise the Electoral Registration Officer is required by law to cancel their postal vote.

For those who do not reapply, they will still be able to vote in person at a polling station until they successfully apply for a postal vote again. Please bear in mind that voters will now need to show photographic identification to vote at their polling station.

Nottingham City Council Electoral Services will be contacting all affected postal voters in the next few weeks to ensure those who wish to remain postal voters reapply for a new postal vote.

Please help us by responding to our correspondence as soon as possible. It is possible that members of the same household will receive their reapplication invitations at different times and by different methods.

You do not need to wait to hear from us, as can reapply for your postal vote online now by applying on the government’s website here.

The information you need to provide is:

  • the address you are registered at
  • your date of birth
  • your national insurance number
  • the address you wish for your postal vote to be sent to (if different from your registered address)
  • a photograph of your signature in black ink on plain white paper.

Whilst the quickest and easiest way to reapply for your postal vote is online, we understand this may not be possible for everyone. If you need to, you can apply with a paper application by downloading a form from the government’s website here

If you need any assistance, contact your Electoral Services team at elections@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or by phone at 0115 876 4111.

If you are concerned whether the correspondence is genuine, correspondence will either be sent by email from nottingham.city.council.elections@notifications.service.gov.uk or by text from GOV.UK.

If you no longer wish to vote by post, you can cancel your postal vote by contacting your Electoral Services team or if it is due to expire, it will be automatically cancelled on 31 January 2026.
