Nottingham City Council is stepping up its efforts to tackle the growing problem of fly-tipping, which is blighting neighbourhoods and costing the city hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Since July, nine additional cleansing teams have been working alongside regular crews, including into the evenings, to clear fly-tipped waste from our streets. In just a few months, they have removed over 198 tonnes of dumped rubbish – costing the Council over £300,000.
Reports of fly-tipping are rising. So far, this financial year, residents have already reported 4,661 incidents, compared to 6,745 across the whole of 2024.
Most residents are doing the right thing and disposing of their waste responsibly, but the small number who don’t are spoiling our neighbourhoods – and leaving everyone else to foot the bill.
Fly-tipping is not only anti-social, but also illegal – offenders risk a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £400.
Neighbourhood Safety Officers work closely with residents, businesses and housing partners to investigate fly-tipping incidents, issue fines, and take legal action where appropriate.
Recent enforcement has included a case where an individual was caught on CCTV dumping two mattresses on Colwick Road. They were tracked down by the Council’s Antisocial Behaviour Team and action was taken.
Councillor Corall Jenkins, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Waste and Equalities said “It’s disappointing to be forced to divert our resources to addressing this entirely avoidable issue.
“Residents want to see money going on improving neighbourhoods and services, not to pay for the actions of the selfish few.
“Those who are dumping their rubbish illegally should think twice; we will not tolerate fly-tipping blighting our communities and will always pursue legal action wherever possible.”
We all want to live in clean, safe neighbourhoods. If you see someone fly-tipping, report it via our website at: https://myaccount.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/service/report_fly_tipping_or_litter
