The redevelopment of Nottingham’s Broad Marsh area has won an award acknowledging its ambition for the city.
It saw off strong competition to scoop the Future Ambition category at Insider Media’s 25th annual East Midlands Property Awards.
The site, which was sold to Homes England by Nottingham City Council in March, will bring forward around 1,000 homes, up to 20,000 square metres of retail, office and community spaces and create around 2,000 full-time jobs.
Broad Marsh is Nottingham’s top priority regeneration project, with significant progress made by the council in advancing its vision before the sale.
Judges considered key achievements including the establishment of a new Nottingham College hub, the opening of the Central Library, Broad Marsh bus station, car park, and the completion of the Green Heart public realm last September.
The project will also benefit from investment by the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), underlining Broad Marsh’s strategic significance to the region and showcasing the collaboration of organisations skilled in delivering complex regeneration projects, in line with the Government’s new Devolution arrangements.
Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Property and Communications, said: “We’re delighted that the Broad Marsh redevelopment has been recognised. It acknowledges the huge amount of work that the council put into the site after it was suddenly handed back to us during a global pandemic in 2020.
“We carried out the Big Conversation consultation to understand what residents and businesses wanted to see in this important space. We’ve delivered the Green Heart off the back of this, while building a new central library and bus station, transforming the Sussex Street area and worked with the NHS to bring a world-class medical facility to Lister Gate.
“The council has also successfully applied for grants to facilitate the partial demolition of the former shopping centre frame to prepare the ground for development. We’re excited by the plans that Homes England have for Broad Marsh and we look forward to working closely with them on bringing these to fruition.”
