50 years of Pride

Jun 13, 2022

This year, as Pride season gets underway, it marks the 50th anniversary of the first march for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK.

Pride events around the world typically happen during the month of June, marking the Stonewall Riots which happened on June 28th 1969 in New York. The first Pride parade in Nottingham took place on 25 July 2009 with the theme ‘Walk with Pride,’ with Nottinghamshire Pride continuing to take place in July. This year’s NottinghamPride celebrations will take place on Saturday 30th July.

This year is extra special, marking 50 years of Pride in the UK. Nottingham City Council has recently received a Silver Award from the world’s second-largest LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall for its commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion at work.

The council’s LGBT network has recently celebrated International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, also known as IDAHO-BIT, by proudly raising the rainbow flag on the Council House.
