The best of Nottingham’s young creative talent has been honoured at Nottingham Playhouse.

Hundreds of people attended the 8th Nottingham Young Creative Awards, which aim to give people aged 13 to 24 who live, study or work in Nottingham the chance to show off their creative work, network with future employers and gain valuable industry experience and mentoring.

A record 350 young creatives submitted their work in 10 different categories this year to meet the 2016  theme of ‘Goals and Dreams’.

First year NTU Theatre Design student, Rebecca Constable was named Young Creative of the Year 2016 for her creative writing piece. BAFTA award-winning local actress, Vicky McClure presented Rebecca with her award in front of a packed audience at Nottingham Playhouse.

Rebecca’s winning creative writing is an aspirational story about the struggle to overcome dyslexia and achieve the goal of a place at university. She wrote the piece with the hope that her short story can help raise awareness of what dyslexia is, and the personal impact teachers and students have on their pupils and classmates.

Nigel Cooke, Chair of the Young Creative Awards, said: “Rebecca’s creative writing piece was just amazing, it was thought provoking, emotional and she really deserves to be named Young Creative of the Year 2016.

“The awards are all about inspiring, supporting and encouraging creativity in the young people of Nottingham. These awards are becoming one of the most exciting events in Nottingham’s creative calendar.

“Every year I am impressed by the creativity, talent and professionalism of our young people here in Nottingham. We are proud to shine a light on their imagination, skill and dedication.”

All of this year’s winners in each category received a cash prize of £100 and there will also be opportunities for mentoring, support or work experience from local creative businesses. The aim is to open doors for young creative people and match them with businesses who can offer everything from work experience and workshops, to promoting their work through exhibitions and creative networks.

The Young Creative Awards has a dedicated website where more information can be found.

The categories include: Architecture and Design, Animation and Digital Media, Creative Writing, Dance, Fashion and Textiles, Film, Graphic Design, Music, Photography and Visual Arts.
