Nottingham Hockey Centre, the biggest hockey centre outside of the Netherlands, has added two 14-space secure bike shelters thanks to grant funding from Nottingham City Council’s Workplace Travel Service.
The Hockey Centre on University Boulevard is at the heart of the sporting community in the city, with around 4,000 visitors a week. The centre, home to Beeston Hockey Club, is used by a number of local clubs and associations for various sports including hockey, football, touch rugby, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, school cricket, softball and more.
The club’s location on University Boulevard means it is perfectly placed for travel by bike or e-scooter using the cycle paths connecting the Boulevard with Nottingham City Centre and beyond.
Thanks to a grant of £10,265two smart secure cycle shelters have been added on site to help staff and visitors who are keen to go green. Nottingham City Council’s Workplace Travel Service team gave Nottingham Hockey Centre advice on what green travel infrastructure could benefit them and assisted with their grant application.
The net cost was paid for through the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund. The Council’s Workplace Parking Levy team also signpost businesses towards the funding.
David Griffiths, Director at Nottingham Hockey Centre said: “The application process was quick and straight forward & the Council’s support and guidance from start to finish was brilliant. Thanks to this grant, our visitors can store bikes securely after cycling to the club, cutting down on the number of cars being used to travel to the club. We’ve since been awarded England Hockey’s Sustainable Club of the Year award and are continuing to push to make the centre more sustainable, recently adding solar panels, LED floodlights and electric vehicle chargers to the site.”
Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications said: “It’s fantastic to see more local facilities taking advantage of our Workplace Travel Service to enable more people to get around in a clean and green way – helping to benefit us all by improving air quality and lowering carbon emissions.”
“I encourage local businesses, charities and public sector organisations to chat to our friendly team to see what kind of green travel improvements your staff and visitors could benefit from.”
