The new £1m Dales centre for Sneinton and surrounding areas opened its doors on 30 May, bringing modern library facilities and the local neighbourhood police team under one roof and offering a host of benefits for local people.

To celebrate, Councillor Glyn Jenkins, Sheriff of Nottingham will be cutting the ribbon to officially open the new centre on Wednesday 12 July between 10am and 10.30am. There will also be storytelling sessions for children from Edale Rise Primary School, the burying of a time capsule as well as music and tea in the WREN funded garden.

The open plan building replaced the old Bakersfield and Sneinton libraries with a more modern and adaptable facility as part of a City Council programme to provide fewer, better libraries which meet the needs and expectations of today’s library users. It provides improved computer access and equipment, including free Wi-Fi, a dedicated under fives children’s area and a great range of activities and events for all ages.

The Dales Centre has been designed to serve the needs of the Dales ward and the new modern library is co-located with offices for neighbourhood policing. Although the police function is administrative, the team are well placed to assess and address the needs of residents.

The new centre has upped its green credentials by having solar panels installed on the roof top. The Dales Centre will be generating its own free and green electricity and will expect to save over £1,000 a year and its electricity bill and reduce its CO2 emissions by over four tonnes per year. This renewable energy project is part of the council’s broader delivery programme to install renewable energy infrastructure across its sites to simultaneously tackle climate change and reduce operating costs.

The City Council will remain in contact with the current and potential users of the centre and will keep the community updated on developments and opportunities for feedback.

Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dave Trimble said: “It’s great news that that this fantastic new library is opening, offering the people of the Dales the 21st century facilities they deserve. Customers will enjoy improved modern facilities in the new building, which will be a positive addition to the local community.

“As we’ve seen with other new libraries, we expect that this will encourage more people from Sneinton and Bakersfield to make the most of their local library.”

There will be a special celebratory launch event of the library on Wednesday 12 July 2017, but users are encouraged to come down and see the centre before that date.
