To mark the upcoming Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort, Nottingham’s Council House has been adorned with a three-dimensional replica Coronation crown.

The huge crown measuring 4.2m wide x 3.8m high was installed this week on the Council House in preparation for the Coronation bank holiday weekend beginning on Saturday 6 May.

The crown was also used during last year’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, constructed by Nottingham-based scenic artists Makers, who have over 30 years’ experience in art fabrication and model-making.

For this year’s royal celebrations, the crown has been retro-fitted with LED lighting effects, as the Council House joins the UK-wide “Lighting Up The Nation” that will see the country join together and illuminate iconic locations across the UK. The Council House and crown will be lit up at dusk each evening from Wednesday 26 April and over the Coronation weekend.

The Coronation and Coronation Concert will be shown live on a giant screen in the grounds of Nottingham Castle – the first chance to visit the site since it closed last year. On Saturday 6 May, the Coronation will be broadcast live from Westminster Abbey in London, however this screening event is now fully booked.

On Sunday 7 May, the Coronation Concert will be screened live from Windsor. Performers confirmed so far include Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel, Freya Ridings and Alexis Ffrench, with more to be announced. The concert will be hosted by renowned actor Hugh Bonneville.

The screenings have been made possible thanks to funding made available by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Tickets for the Coronation Concert screening can be booked at and cost just £1 each (inclusive of VAT and booking fees).

Patrick Loy, Head of Events at Nottingham City Council said: “It’s great to be able to once again dress and light the Council House in red, white and blue to enable Nottingham to mark the Coronation of King Charles III. There are limited tickets remaining for the Coronation Concert screening, so we encourage people to book quickly to enjoy this picnic-style screening event in the beautiful castle grounds.”
