People in Nottingham are being encouraged to leave their cars at home and use other modes of transport throughout May.
Nottingham City Council are teaming up with the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust to encourage everyone to go car-free for some of their everyday journeys and try cleaner, greener, healthier ways of getting from A to B.
The challenge starts on Friday 1 May and encourages people to choose active travel options like walking, cycling or scooting and using public transport for a month. It’s a great way of staying fit and healthy, saving money and helping to improve air quality. Everyone who signs up will get online access to useful hints, tips and support and a personalised dashboard where they can log their journeys.
As an extra incentive, there are special prizes on offer, including two adult Micro Scooters worth over £165 each, a Raleigh Strada City Hybrid bike worth over £450, and a 12 -course tasting menu for two at the famous Restaurant Sat Bains worth over £500. There are also lots of shopping and other vouchers up for grabs including Broadway Cinema tickets. Generous prizes have been donated by transport providers Nottingham City Transport, Trent Barton and Nottingham Express Transit. See the website for full prize details.
Everyone who lives or works in Nottingham can sign up to the challenge. People can go solo or team up with friends, family or colleagues.
Councillor Linda Woodings, Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people across Nottingham to rethink how they travel day to day. By choosing to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport for some of our everyday journeys, we can all play a part in improving air quality, reducing congestion and boosting our own health and wellbeing. I’d encourage everyone who lives or works in Nottingham to get involved, whether that’s on your own or as part of a team, and see the benefits for yourself.”
Liz, Programme Manager at the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, said: “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Nottingham City Council this May as we bring to life the Big Nottingham Travel Challenge. It’s going to be a great month of clean and greener travel in Nottingham. So sign up and challenge yourself and your team to walk, wheel and take the bus or tram for more of your everyday journeys.”

Sat Bains, of Restaurant Sat Bains, said: “We’re delighted to support this fantastic initiative encouraging people across Nottingham to travel in healthier and more sustainable ways. At Restaurant Sat Bains, we’re passionate about our local community and the environment, so it’s great to be part of something that promotes positive change. We hope our prize gives people an extra incentive to get involved, and we look forward to welcoming the winners for a special dining experience to celebrate their efforts.”
