Postbox, pens and paper

Residents of Nottingham are invited to rediscover the simple pleasure of handwritten correspondence through the Library Letters Project, a new initiative from Nottingham City Libraries that connects people across the Atlantic through pen-pal friendships.

Launching on Saturday 21 March at 12pm at Nottingham Central Library, the project will begin with a welcoming drop-in event at Nottingham Central Library. The initiative is being delivered in partnership with Mystic & Noank Library Connecticut, bringing together communities in the UK and the United States through the timeless act of writing letters.

The Library Letters Project encourages people to slow down, write by hand and build meaningful connections in an increasingly digital world. Participants will have the opportunity to write a letter to a new pen-pal overseas, sharing stories, interests and experiences with someone they may never otherwise meet.

The launch event will take place in the Central library’s lounge area and is open to everyone, whether you are an experienced letter writer or completely new to the idea. Attendees can meet others who share an interest in analogue creativity, learn how the project works, and begin their first letter on the day.

After the launch, residents can continue to take part at their own pace. A dedicated Library Letters Project letterbox will be available at Nottingham Central Library during opening hours, along with stationery, pens, and clear guidance to help participants get started.

By reconnecting people through handwritten communication, the project highlights the role libraries play not only as places for books and learning, but also as welcoming community spaces that foster creativity, conversation and connection.

Councillor Corall Jenkins, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Waste and Equalities at Nottingham City Council, said: “Life moves so fast that we don’t always stop and take a breath. What I love about the Library Letters Project is that it gives people a moment to slow down, pick up a pen, and really connect with someone. There’s something special about writing a letter by hand and knowing someone, miles away, will sit down and read it. It’s a simple idea, but a meaningful one, and I’m really pleased to see Nottingham and our friends in the US joining together through it.”
