Partners across the city are joining forces to tackle issues in local areas, including crime, anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping and dog fouling.

A series of Days of Action will be taking place across Nottingham over the next year.

It comes after feedback from members of the public about issues in their neighbourhoods and what they want partners to tackle. These Days of Action will see an intense day of activity in each area to make a visible difference to some of these problems.

These days will run along the key themes of crime, anti-social behaviour, community safety and the environment. The overarching aims of the days of action are to:

  • Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour
  • Increase community engagement and empowerment
  • Improve the perception of an area
  • Get residents to take ownership in improving neighbourhoods
  • Create and strengthen networks and partnerships.

These Days of Action will be happening in all twenty wards across the city between June 2021 and March 2022. The first one is happening in Mapperley next Wednesday 2 June 2021. Then it’s onto the Dales ward on 9 June and then the St Ann’s one on 16 June, where The Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Merlita Bryan, will be out meeting residents.

Some areas may have special activity depending on residents’ concerns, but residents can expect:

  • Patrols to tackle bins and rubbish on streets
  • Patrols to tackle fly-tipping and dog fouling
  • Operations to tackle car idling and inconsiderate parking
  • Street deep cleans and community litter picks
  • Crime patrols by Nottinghamshire Police
  • Fire safety advice and free safe & well visits from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • Engagement activity and support from Nottingham City Homes
  • Rented property visits, inspections and tenant support from the council’s Safer Housing team
  • Free Youth and Play activities
  • Some areas will have community drop-in sessions, including free benefits and employment advice and a chance to talk to local councillors.

The Days of Action will involve teams from the Nottingham Crime and Drugs Partnership, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nottingham City Homes, Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing, The Renewal Trust, the voluntary and community sector, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham. Other partners will be involved in the days of actions, depending on ward issues.

Lord Vernon Coaker, the Independent Chair of the Nottingham Crime and Drugs Partnership, said: “We are bringing partners together to make a real difference to neighbourhoods across Nottingham. Everyone deserves to live in a clean, safe area and these Days of Action will go towards achieving that goal.

“The Nottingham Crime and Drugs Partnership is made up of partners from across the city, bringing together agencies for these days of intense activity. We want to make a real change and improve crime, anti-social behaviour, community safety and the environment.”

Cllr Neghat Khan, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Safety and Inclusion at Nottingham City Council, said: “At the council we work daily to help improve neighbourhoods, but by coming together with partners we can have a bigger impact on the issues that concern our residents.

“We have listened to feedback and residents have told us what needs to improve in their areas. So it’s important we come together to tackle these issues and support residents to make their neighbourhoods the best place they can be. I would encourage residents to take part in these Days of Action and to keep a look out for when we are in your area.”

Superintendent Mat Healey, Area Commander for Nottingham, said: “We continuously work closely with partners to ensure that Nottingham as a City is a safe place to live, work and socialise. These days of action form just a small part of that ongoing commitment.

“We constantly strive to improve by listening and acting on feedback from communities. I encourage anyone who has any issues to speak officers on patrol, report them via 101 or by using What Matters (#NottsMatters), our email service that allows communities to feedback on the issues that matter to them the most.”

Bryn Coleman, Head of Prevention, Protection and Partnerships at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This is a great opportunity for us to get important safety messages about smoke alarms, escape routes and similar issues over to the public.  We offer free Safe and Well visits to vulnerable people all year round and hope these Days of Action will see more people taking advantage of them.”

Residents are encouraged to get involved with the Days of Action. Keep an eye out on your local area social media page, for example My Dales or My Mapperley. More information will also be posted on www.AskLion.co.uk nearer to your neighbourhood event.
