Nottingham City Council has welcomed nine new frontline officers as part of ongoing investment to make Nottingham a safer, cleaner and more welcoming city for residents, businesses and visitors.

The investment includes five new Community Protection Officers (CPOs), who have recently completed their training and are now out on patrol across Nottingham, supporting communities, tackling anti-social behaviour and helping residents feel safer in their neighbourhoods.

Community Protection Officers play an important role in supporting residents and businesses, providing a visible presence in communities, responding to concerns, engaging with the public and helping to address issues such as anti-social behaviour, street drinking, nuisance behaviour and environmental crime.

It also includes four Safer City Partnership Officers, delivered in partnership with It’s in Nottingham, who provide a highly visible presence in the city centre, supporting businesses, visitors and vulnerable people while helping to address issues affecting the city. Many residents and visitors will already recognise the officers from their distinctive red jackets and their regular presence across the city centre.

Acting as additional eyes and ears on the ground, the officers provide a highly visible and approachable presence, helping people access support, reporting concerns to the relevant agencies and working closely with partners to address issues affecting the city centre. They also play an important role in supporting businesses, engaging with visitors and helping people feel safe and welcome when spending time in Nottingham.

The additional officers form part of a coordinated approach to tackling anti-social behaviour, supporting vulnerable people and improving the experience of everyone who lives, works and visits Nottingham. It will help increase visibility across the city and support the delivery of initiatives such as Operation Reclaim, which is bringing together partners to tackle issues that matter most to residents and businesses.

Councillor Matt Shannon, Executive Member for Community Protection and Neighbourhoods and Equalities, said:

“Our top priority is making sure that everyone feels safe in Nottingham, whether they live here, work here, or are visiting.

“Today’s announcement is part of our continuing investment in community safety. These additional officers will provide a visible presence, engage with communities and tackle anti-social behaviour and other issues that affect people’s quality of life.

“The five new Community Protection Officers and four Safer City Partnership Officers will help create a safer, cleaner and more welcoming Nottingham.”

Alex Flint, CEO, It’s in Nottingham said;

“Prioritising investment in safety and crime reduction remains at the core of our strategy to support businesses in Nottingham, alongside the promotion of our vibrant and thriving city centre. This additional investment from Nottingham City Council will further strengthen our joint response to antisocial behaviour and crime as a collaborative, strategic partnership – news which will be welcomed by businesses, and everyone who visits Nottingham to work, study, shop and enjoy our night-time economy venues.”

The investment is part of Nottingham City Council’s wider commitment to improving community safety and building pride in Nottingham’s neighbourhoods and public spaces. Residents can report anti-social behaviour and community safety concerns through Nottingham City Council’s website.
