The council is making free pads and tampons available at 24 locations across the city, thanks to additional funding. The scheme is aimed at tackling period poverty and easing pressure on household budgets.
New dispensers can be found in the toilet areas of the selected buildings, for residents and visitors to take what they need, without asking or drawing attention.
The initiative forms part of Nottingham City Council’s wider £7.6 million programme of investment into frontline services, focused on supporting residents and communities with the cost of living and improving access to help where it is needed most.
Period poverty affects women, girls and other people who menstruate; who cannot afford or access the products and facilities they need. Providing free pads and tampons in public buildings helps people manage their periods without worrying about the cost.
Councillor Helen Kalsi, Executive Member for Adults, Social Care, and Health, said:
“Period products are essential, but the cost can put extra pressure on people already struggling to make ends meet. No one should have to go without them because they cannot afford them.
“By making pads and tampons freely available in buildings across Nottingham, we’re offering practical help. People can take what they need without having to ask or explain their circumstances.
“This is a simple step to help tackle period poverty and support people’s health and wellbeing.”
