Nottingham City Council has announced a new civic celebration – Lord Mayor’s Day – to take place at Nottingham Castle with visitors invited for a low-cost entry of £2.
The event will showcase some of the Lord Mayor’s key priorities which include celebrating the voluntary sector, promoting the importance of literature and music, and highlighting the city’s legendary rebel Robin Hood.
The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Cheryl Barnard, and other civic leaders in full ceremonial dress will open the event at 11am at the castle’s iconic gatehouse. The day will feature a variety of entertainment including a medieval encampment offering visitors the chance to meet Robin Hood and his outlaws – including Maid Marian, Little John, and Friar Tuck – plus have-a-go archery. Live music will be provided by local artists including Carlton Brass and Fun Chorus on the bandstand, plus The Old Time Rags, Franklin Anselm, and Dura Mater on the middle bailey.
Young people’s literature will be celebrated with How To Train Your Dragon storytelling, supported by puppeteer Laura Matthews, as well as a dragon-making workshop. Other participation activities will include face painting and a make-your-own bookmark workshop.
Last but not least, in partnership with Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service (NCVS) the council will thank Nottingham’s volunteering champions with an afternoon tea party hosted by the Lord Mayor. Specially invited guests will receive free entry to the event as well as exclusive access to the tea party where they will be recognised for their volunteering efforts. Market stalls hosted by charitable and voluntary organisations will offer visitors the chance to find out more about volunteering and opportunities to make a difference.
Tickets are priced at £2 per person, and can be booked in advance via Nottingham Castle and What’s On Nottingham. The low ticket price highlights the city’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
Councillor David Mellen, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “From Nottingham’s rich history and vibrant cultural scene to the incredible contribution made by our volunteers and community organisations, this new event will celebrate the people and partnerships that make our city such a special place. Without volunteers, many things in Nottingham just wouldn’t happen in our city. We want to say a real ‘thank you’ to those who give their time freely for the benefit of others, at this event at Nottingham Castle.
“We’re particularly proud to be recognising some of Nottingham’s volunteering heroes, whose dedication makes a real difference to communities across the city every day. At the same time, through music, storytelling, creative activities and opportunities to connect with local charities and voluntary groups, we hope to inspire more people to get involved in civic life and discover new ways to participate in their community.
“With affordable ticket entry and a fantastic programme of family-friendly activities at Nottingham Castle, we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors of all ages for a day of celebration, learning and community spirit.”
