Nottingham’s massive St George’s flag is to be unfurled on the Council House to show the city’s support for England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 which starts this week.

The flag will be installed on Tuesday (16 June) ahead of England’s first match taking place on Wednesday (17 June) against Croatia.

Believed to be the largest in the country, the flag measures 60ft by 26ft (18m by 8m) and covers most of the building’s frontage.

Nottingham City Council has previously displayed the flag in support of England during other tournaments, including the 2024 European Championship and the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 final.

With many venues across the city showing matches during the tournament, residents who attend screenings are being encouraged to enjoy the World Cup safely and respectfully.

Giant banners will be displayed either side of the flag, one highlighting that ‘Football is for everyone, everywhere’ incorporating the Show Racism the Red Card and Kick It Out logos. Local sponsorship delivered in partnership with signage firm John E Wright has covered the cost of the banners.

Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “We’re proud to be flying the St George flag on the Council House as the World Cup gets underway, showing our support for England and celebrating the passion that brings our communities together.

“Football has a unique way of uniting people and we hope fans will enjoy the tournament, come together to cheer on their team, and take pride in our city’s shared spirit.

“We wish Thomas Tuchel and the England team all the best for their first game, and above all, we encourage everyone to enjoy the tournament safely and responsibly so that it’s a positive experience for all. Nottingham is right behind you and good luck to the Three Lions!”
