Nottingham City Libraries is excited to announce that the brand-new Sherwood Library will open on Friday 17 April 2026, marking a major milestone for the community following a long-awaited redevelopment.
The new Sherwood Library has been designed as a bright, modern and welcoming space for everyone. It features a colourful children’s area, free WiFi, public computers, study tables, comfortable seating, and a bookable meeting room, providing a flexible space for learning, connection and community activity.
A standout feature of the building is its balcony, which will be planted with greenery from Woodthorpe Park Nursery. This will create a calm, leafy environment – a green haven for reading and relaxing just moments from the bustle of Sherwood High Street.
An exciting opening programme is currently being finalised and will be announced soon. It will include live performances, children’s activities, school sessions and more. Beyond launch, the library will host a regular programme of community events, including Totstime, reading groups and craft sessions.
To support residents in the lead-up to opening, the Mobile Library will continue operating until Saturday 11 April, ensuring uninterrupted access to library services during the final countdown.
To celebrate the opening, existing members will be able to collect a brand-new library card (free of charge as always) including a special limited Sherwood edition designed by a local Nottingham artist for opening week. It is a great time to rejoin for anyone whose membership has lapsed or who needs a replacement card.
Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “I’m incredibly excited to announce that Sherwood Library will open on Friday 17 April. This is a really important moment for the community.
“We know how much this library means to local people. Throughout this journey, residents have told us how much they’ve missed it and how important it is to have this space back at the heart of Sherwood.
“The new library is a fantastic space -bright, welcoming and full of opportunities for people of all ages. I’m looking forward to seeing the community come back together here and make it their own once again.”
“I said we would get this library open by spring, and I’m proud we’ve been able to deliver on that. It’s been a complex project, and I want to thank the teams across the Council who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this happen.
Sherwood Library is one of fourteen libraries across the city, offering books, events, study spaces, computer access and support for all ages.
