Thursday 20 November marks World Children’s Day 2025, an important time to show support for the children and young people of Nottingham. It is also a chance to reaffirm our commitment to becoming a UNICEF UK recognised Child Friendly City, placing the rights, voices and wellbeing of our young people at the heart of everything we do.

To mark the day, the Child Friendly Nottingham team is hosting a creative and cultural event at the Council House, with over 40 children and young people aged 11-16 from across the city from community groups, alternative education providers and schools.

The young people will be meeting with council and business leaders along with voluntary organisations to share their views and findings on making Nottingham city centre a safe and welcoming place for children and young people.

In the run up to World Children’s Day, the young people have conducted surveys and research and have produced reports, films, podcasts and presentations on their views.

A ‘safe and welcoming city centre’ is one of the priorities identified in the Child Friendly Nottingham Action Plan. This themed World Children’s Day has been made possible through collaboration between Nottingham City Council, It’s in Nottingham, City Arts, Stone Soup Academy, Pythian Club, EPIC, Evolve and Equation.

The children will be able to enjoy activities in groups after presenting their findings from surveys they have carried out about what the children of our city would like to see and how they feel about Nottingham.

Councillor Cheryl Barnard, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “I’m so pleased to see that we are celebrating World Children’s Day with a fantastic free event for young people from our communities.

“Supporting the young people and children of Nottingham is a huge focus of ours and is part of our wider effort and aim to become a UNICEF UK- recognised Child Friendly City. I look forward to hearing about the fantastic effort by the Council and all partner organisations involved.”

In 2023, the Child Friendly campaign was launched, setting out the ambition to put children and young people at the heart of Nottingham.

In 2024, this was built on this by launching the first Children and Young People’s Perception Survey, giving young people a stronger voice in shaping the services and city they want to see.

2025 has seen a significant step forward with this exciting partnership event, demonstrating continued commitment to supporting our children and young people and realising our Child Friendly vision.

A report will be produced from the event which will be shared with the city council, city partners and businesses and agencies who are providing services in the city.

Media invitation

This is a closed event, however, there will be an opportunity for the media to talk to children and young people taking part in the event and for photographs.
