Nottingham City Council is continuing its efforts to restore library provision in Sherwood following significant delays with the completion of the new building.

A survey has now been launched, that looks to gather resident’s views on temporary library provision, while work continues.

The Council recognises the strength of feeling in the community and shares residents’ frustration at how long the people of Sherwood have been left without a local library. The focus remains on seeing the outstanding works completed so the library can finally open.

While the Council continues to engage with the developer to resolve the issues, it is also exploring potential temporary solutions that would give residents access to library services.

Options being considered include:

– Leasing and repurposing a retail unit to use as a library space on Mansfield Road
– Having a portable unit in the car park of a local community centre
– Exploring mobile library services at weekends

To help guide the approach, a short survey has launched today, asking residents’ views on if and what temporary service they would most like to see. This will help ensure the Council delivers a solution that reflects local needs while the new Sherwood Library is completed.

Nottingham City Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan said: “As Leader of this Council, I want to be absolutely clear: it is unacceptable that Sherwood has been without a library for so long. I visited the site recently and met with Hockley Developments. They have now re-engaged and indicated a willingness to work with us to resolve the outstanding issues. On Saturday, I was in Sherwood with local councillors and residents, including campaigners. I heard directly the frustration people feel, particularly about the disadvantage to children who have lost their much-loved library.

“This is a personal priority for me and one I am determined to see through. That’s why we are prepared to step in, commit the necessary funding, and get this resolved. We will not allow further delay to the library opening. We want this library open.

“In the meantime, we will not stand still – we are working on exploring temporary options so residents can once again access library services, but we want to know from residents what it is they want, instead of making the decision for them.

“We are listening, and we are taking action.”

The survey will be open for six weeks. Residents can take part here: www.nottinghamcitylibraries.co.uk/sherwood-survey-form
