More than 50 local roads and pavements across the city are to benefit from over £1m of improvements including resurfacing, new lighting and trees as part of an ongoing investment programme.

Next Tuesday (March 22nd) the City Council’s Executive Board is set to approve the allocation of £903,800 from the Local Transport Plan funding that the council receives from Government for a range of schemes from Bestwood and Bulwell to Aspley and St Ann’s. This is on top of over £121,000 of work already carried out in Clifton, Sherwood and Bakersfield.

The council has also secured significant funding from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund for a package of measures that will further improve the condition of residential streets. £8.5 million will be split between each ward, with the areas most in need getting proportionately more funding. The works will be identified by local people and prioritised by ward councillors. This could include work to improve the condition of pavements, roads and cycle ways to make sustainable travel a more attractive option.

A further £9.5m of the LUF money will be spent on measures to encourage more walking, cycling and scooting to school, an upgrade of street lighting across the city to bring the lamps up to LED standard and expansion of the electric vehicle charging points network.

Councillor Rosemary Healy, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Cleansing Services, said: “The condition of the local streets where people live is of great importance to residents and I’m pleased we have secured significant Government funding to address some of the issues in our communities.

“As well as improving road and pavement surfaces, there’s a wide range of other work that will help to improve the air quality by encouraging more walking and cycling for short trips, as well as improving safety in our neighbourhoods with enhanced street lighting.”
