Today, Monday 22nd June, marks the 72nd anniversary of the landing of SS Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948 carrying passengers from the Caribbean, who were invited to Britain to assist with post-war reconstruction.

Each year on 22nd June, National Windrush Day, we celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants.

This evening Senior Councillors and guests from the African Caribbean community will join Pastor Clive Foster, Senior Minister at the Pilgrim Church, on the steps of the Council House to honour the contribution the Windrush generation has made to Nottingham. The occasion will include speeches from Windrush generation campaigners and Civic Leaders in Nottingham.

Later tonight Nottingham City Council will light the Council House green as part of the Windrush celebrations.

Councillor Rebecca Langton, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “The Windrush generation has enriched Nottingham culture and their contribution to life in our city has been significant.

“It is important to show appreciation and to honour the Windrush pioneers by marking the anniversary and celebrating the diversity of Nottingham’s history and keeping the Windrush legacy alive for future generations as a vital part of our shared history and heritage.”
