Hundreds of people across Nottingham are getting together with neighbours and friends to share food and celebrate all that we have in common.
Nottingham City Council is proud to support the Great Get Together and celebrate all of the community organised events taking place between now and early July. The Nottingham Together team have been supporting this year by offering individual pots of £250 funding to help bring people together and celebrate all they have in common.
Each year the Great Get Together weekend is held to remember Jo Cox MP. Her husband and friends say Jo lived her life according to the belief that “we have more in common than divides us” and in that spirit they are hoping that as many people as possible will organise or attend a celebration within their local communities.
Great Get Togethers are opportunities for people to come together with friends, neighbours and strangers for street parties, picnics, barbecues and bake-offs. The events can be big or small, indoors or out and all will be a part of this big national celebration of unity.
Cllr Rebecca Langton, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “I know that in Nottingham we always have more in common than divides us and it’s great to see the number of events and activities Nottingham people are organising to support this great cause.
“I am proud that Nottingham is a diverse city and people from different backgrounds get along well together here. We value equality and inclusivity and it’s no surprise that Nottingham was recently crowned the country’s friendliest city!
“I’d like to say a huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who has organised events to bring their community together. When we get together with neighbours, friends and families we build our relationships, celebrate all that we have in common and create stronger communities. I am proud that we support each other here.”
