Local cricketing hero Stuart Broad has had one of Nottingham’s trams named after him.
The Nottinghamshire and England star, who was put forward for the naming through a nominations process, unveiled his name on tram 237 during a special ceremony today (Thursday, September 17) at the Wilkinson Street Tram Depot.
Broad, who sealed England the 2015 Ashes at his home ground of Trent Bridge in June by taking a career-best eight wickets for 15 runs during the first innings of the England win over Australia, follows other sporting legends including Brian Clough, Torvill and Dean, and Boxer Carl Froch to have a tram named after him.
Councillor Jane Urquhart of Nottingham City Council said, “Nottingham is incredibly proud of Stuart and his sporting achievements.
“It seems only fitting that a world class cricket player is honoured with his name on a world class transport system and I am really pleased we can pay tribute to him in his home town where he secured the Ashes victory earlier this year.
“Stuart is reaching the pinnacle of his cricketing career, and I am sure he will be an integral player for England and a great ambassador for Nottingham for many years to come.”
Broad, who was born in Nottingham, commented, “I feel really proud to have a tram named after me, and this is another highlight of what has become a really memorable year.
“No matter where I travel in the world, it will be nice to know that a tram carrying my name will be travelling over the River Trent, the place which has become my home and where we secured the Ashes victory.”
