Award-winning chef Sat Bains is to become the latest local figure to have one of Nottingham’s new trams named after them.
Sat was nominated for the honour by members of the public for his efforts to put the city on the culinary map, and later this week (Thursday, September 10) he will unveil his name on the side of one of the latest additions to the NET fleet.
Jamie Swift, NET Marketing Manager, said: “The expansion of the network has seen the introduction of 22 new Citadis trams, and all of them will be named in the coming months.
“Some have already been given names suggested by members of the community, and we are delighted that one of the fleet will be named after Sat who has done so much to promote Nottingham during his exceptional culinary career.”
Proprietor of the two-Michelin-starred Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms on Lenton Lane, Sat has been recognised by fellow chefs and food writers from all over the world for his innovative style of cuisine and has long championed the use of quality local produce on his menus.
The 44-year-old chef has been a winner on the BBC’s Great British Menu competition and is a regular on Saturday Kitchen.
Sat said: “The new tram network is a true 21st century transport system: environmentally friendly and zero emissions, something we have been working tirelessly to achieve at the restaurant.
“To have one of the trams named after me is not only an honour but a huge privilege too. I’m humbled to have even been nominated.”
Sat is the latest in an honourable line of Nottingham celebrities, community stalwarts, local heroes and legendary figures with trams named after them. Others include Robin Hood, Brian Clough, Carl Froch, playwright Stephen Lowe and, most recently, the city’s first black entrepreneur, George Africanus.
Councillor Jane Urquhart of Nottingham City Council added: “Sat Bains is a great ambassador for the city. Not only has he shown what hard work and dedication can achieve, he has helped enhance Nottingham’s reputation as a great food and drink destination. The tram naming is the city’s way of celebrating his achievements and thanking him for the important contribution he has made.”
