The Leader of Nottingham City Council has strongly condemned the attacks in New Zealand and urged people to remain united within Nottingham’s communities.

Councillor Jon Collins said: “These horrific attacks overnight were an act of terrorism which deliberately targeted the Muslim community. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of all those affected.

“We cannot, and will not, let crimes of hate like this divide our communities. We must come together in the same way we did after the Manchester Arena bombing two years ago and following the murder of MP Jo Cox in 2016. At this time, it is more important than ever that we share her message that we have more in common than divides us.

“We will be liaising with the Police about what urgent steps can be taken to provide reassurance to local communities, particularly security around mosques.”

The Council House flag will be lowered today as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the New Zealand attack, while a book of condolence will be opened there. The Council House will also be illuminated tonight in the red, white and blue of the New Zealand flag.
