Nottingham will be marking Black History Month from 1 to 31 October with a range of events and activities at venues across the city.

Black History Month has been celebrated nationally every October since 1987. It’s a chance for people in the city to learn about the contribution that African and African-Caribbean people have made to Nottingham and the UK over the many hundreds of years they’ve been a part of the country’s social fabric.

Nottingham City Council launched its Black History Season with a drumming session at Radford Academy School led by Milla Hanna. Councillor Eunice Campbell addressed a school assembly filled with children, parents and teachers and spoke about her own journey as a black councillor, paying an emotional tribute to her late husband Cllr Alan Clark, who was also heavily involved in the running of the school.

Councillor Campbell said “Education is the most important tool that any young person can have. Black children need role models of all descriptions to look up to, especially those that look like themselves.”

Venues holding Black History Month events include the New Art Exchange, Nottingham Contemporary, University of Nottingham, Nottingham Castle, Lakeside Arts, Nottingham Playhouse and the Theatre Royal/Royal Centre.
