Creating great places to live and work needs smart leadership to guide development – as delegates will hear at a UK Smart Leadership Conference in Nottingham.
The event organised in collaboration between Nottingham Trent University’s Nottingham Business School; the real estate, infrastructure and natural resources programme, project and advisory services consultancy Turner & Townsend, and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership is due to attract around 100 senior business, public sector and organisational leaders. It will be held at Nottingham Conference Centre, from 10am to 1pm on Thursday September 28 (2017).
Conference discussions will include the Centre for Cities’ new report on Delivering Change: How city partnerships make the most of public assets, supported by Turner & Townsend and law firm Bevan Brittan. The Conference will look at better ways for cities to manage and improve ‘city assets’; the network of essential services such as public information, schools, libraries, transportation routes, hospitals, power plants, water supply, waste management, law enforcement and community services.
The Conference will enable business and public sector leaders to share best practice on questions such as:
- how leaders can make their cities great places to live and work, which attract the best people;
- how a city fosters a positive sense of place among the people living there;
- the future of cities, including the use of information communications technology (ICT) to make their services run more efficiently
Speakers at the Conference will include:
- David Ralph, Chief Executive of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership; the private sector-led partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary organisations which works to grow the economy and jobs across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
- Mike Carr, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Employer and Economic Engagement at NTU
- Professor Baback Yazdani, Dean of Nottingham Business School, NTU
- Nicola Yates OBE, Chief Executive of Future Cities Catapult; a consultancy working to advance urban innovation and grow UK companies, to make cities better.
- Chris Henning, Strategic Director for Economy, Nottingham City Council.
The Conference will be preceded by a morning roundtable discussion for invited guests, on the better management of city assets in the East Midlands region. This roundtable will be organised by Centre for Cities, with Turner & Townsend and Bevan Brittan. It will be chaired by Andrew Carter, Chief Executive of the Centre for Cities, and Ian Curryer, Chief Executive of Nottingham City Council, with other senior business and public sector leaders.
The Conference event will also include workshops on the East Midlands HS2 Growth Strategy – the strategy for making the most (economically and otherwise) of Government’s plan for an HS2 Phase Two route through Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire – and sessions on the work of NTU, the D2N2 LEP and Turner & Townsend.
