There’s positive news for job seekers in Nottingham; as building projects of all sizes move forward apace, job opportunities in construction, shop-fitting and associated trades are becoming available and local people are in a great position to find work or take up training which will enable them to work on some of the city’s major developments.

Work is well underway on Nottingham Southside, the Broadmarsh area and beyond and as the city grows, so do the number of opportunities for unemployed residents to play a significant role, not only creating the city’s skyline but also its future.

Nottingham Jobs, a successful employment and skills partnership run by Nottingham City Council, which works directly with some of the major employers and training providers involved in construction, is proud to be able to link these major developments with opportunities for job seekers at the Nottingham Jobs Fair, which returns to the city on 12 September.

The fair is organised by the Council with partners Department for Work and Pensions and the Futures Group and is brought to the city again this year in association with Further and Adult Education provider Nottingham College, who themselves are eagerly awaiting the completion of their impressive new Skills Hub building on Canal Street in the city.

Whilst this year’s fair will undoubtedly have a construction skills focus, there will be job and training opportunities for local people in a wide range of areas, including retail, administration, driving, customer service, personal care and manufacturing.

People of all ages who live in Nottingham city and the surrounding neighbourhoods are invited to come along whatever their previous experience has been in employment, training or education and to make the most of this opportunity to speak directly with employers and locally-based community groups who will be able to offer them advice, training and support to find work.

This year’s event will be held at Nottingham Conference Centre on Burton St, Nottingham NG1 4BU (Map) which is part of Nottingham Trent University Events and Conferencing. The event is expected to attract around a hundred employers, training providers and support agencies plus thousands of job seekers.

The employers so far confirmed for this year’s fair will be promoting almost 1000 job vacancies between them and include Argos, Primark, East Midlands Airport, Keepmoat and HMRC.

Councillor Neghat Khan, Portfolio Holder for Early Years, Education and Employment; “Nottingham is experiencing a significant amount of growth and regeneration at the moment so the need to speak to residents about the job opportunities this can create has never been so important.

“Through its successful Nottingham Jobs service and jobs fairs, Nottingham City Council plays a vital role in this growth, making sure that employers with vacancies are on board and that these are made available to unemployed residents wherever they live.

“The service also attracts training providers to offer the right kind of skills to the very people who will play an active role in Nottingham’s future; not only building a better Nottingham but working in its shops, customer service and manufacturing businesses.

“I’m proud to be able to say that even at times of financial uncertainty for Nottingham City Council, the Nottingham Jobs Fair not only continues to provide Nottingham residents with access to the jobs which are needed right now, but the advice, training and support to give them every chance to sustain work in the future.”

James Whybrow, Vice Principal, Nottingham College added; “We’re thrilled to be supporting the Nottingham Jobs Fair and by supporting events like this we’re in the best place to be able to build relationships with employers, grow the reputation of the college and promote the wide range of opportunities on offer for the people of Nottingham.

“We have a number of really exciting employment opportunities to work with us here at the College plus over 150 apprenticeship vacancies where we have employers looking to recruit new talent, so the timing of this job fair is really important for the economy of Nottingham.”

Jo Fitch, Recruitment Outreach Lead, HR Operations and Transformation, HMRC said; “Our aspiration is that all of our Regional Centres will be staffed with a flexible and diverse workforce that is representative of the community that it serves so we are hoping to use the jobs fair as an opportunity to access a number of different potential audiences.

“We also want to raise awareness of HMRC’s role, the variety of roles and careers that we offer, and increase the number of candidates applying for our vacancies.

“Job fairs are a good thing as they allow us to maximise our recruiting efforts and provides the opportunity to talk to potential candidates about the type of work we do and the career pathways that are open to them if they were to join the organisation.”
