From 11 to 15 December 2017, Nottingham Castle is opening its doors and offering a free visit for National Lottery players.
Nottingham Castle is one of 350 participating National Lottery funded visitor attractions across the UK that will be saying ‘thanks’ to people who have raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket.
The Nottingham Castle Transformation Project has received £13.9m from the Heritage Lottery Fund which will be used to deliver a major project of improvements to increase tourism, and the economy as well as to showcase this source of pride for the people of Nottingham.
Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7bn National Lottery funding since 1994. This is a small gesture of thanks and a way of giving something back to the people who buy tickets.”
The idea is simple: any visitor who presents a National Lottery ticket or scratchcard between 11 and 15 December will receive free entry for up to six people.
Cllr Dave Trimble, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players we’ll be able to ensure Nottingham Castle is transformed into a world-class heritage destination. Plans are underway to redevelop the whole site, including the Ducal Palace and grounds, and the sprawling cave network hidden within the Castle Rock.
We are really going to showcase the depth of the Castle’s collections and the lives of the people of Nottingham. We would never have been able to deliver such a major project for the City without the support of the National Lottery and the millions of players across the country. We’d really like to thank them and this opportunity to visit us for free is another way of showing our gratitude. They can also start to imagine how the transformed site might look when completed in 2020. There will be some information on site.”

Nottingham Castle Transformation Project – This five year project will see Nottingham Castle transformed into a world-class heritage destination. A total of £29.4 million is being invested to redevelop the whole site, including the Ducal Palace and Grounds, and the sprawling cave network hidden within the Castle Rock. The plans for this transformation are both ambitious and sympathetic. One thousand years of history lie ready to be discovered on a site rich in archaeology and human interest. A beacon of power, protest and rebellion throughout the centuries, Nottingham Castle will be revitalised to reflect the wealth of its history, the depth of its collections and the lives of the people of Nottingham. This is the most significant heritage regeneration project in the UK today.
