Rochelle Simpson is crowned Nottingham Young Creative Of The Year with emotional film about knife crime

The Nottingham Young Creative Awards enjoyed another sell-out evening of performances and awards at the Nottingham Playhouse with 17 year old Rochelle Simpson winning the top award for her short film Catch 22.

Rochelle’s film is a dramatised film about a knife murder in Nottingham. Rochelle was presented with the award by Nottingham actor Harry Gilby, who is fresh from his success in the movie Tolkien, in which he plays Tolkien as a young man. The night also included performances from local musicians and dancers.

The judges praised Rochelle’s film as a mature look at a very serious subject. Her technique, use of scene changes, darkness, memory and flashbacks are highly professional. She produced a memorable film for which she can be justifiably proud.

2019 has been a great year for the Young Creative awards as it saw another bumper crop of entries. Awards were presented in eleven categories, all of which were of the highest quality, with one coming through to be the Nottingham Young Creative of the Year.

Jonathan English, the chair of the Young Creatives Trustees said: “We were again excited by the quality of the work and the thoughtful nature of the young people, the upbeat, the humour, and the imagination and talent on display. Some very serious issues were raised by the young people’s work. They creatively identified issues which concern them,  including knife crime, the environment and depression.

“Our young creatives really shine an amazingly  bright light on Nottingham and it seems a shame to pick out winners of awards, as all of the 77 shortlisted entrants were superb.”

The final list of 2019 category winners is below.
